„You are not born a hero, you become one“. Cardinal František Tomášek, Church and State (1965–1992)
In this comprehensive biography, the author focuses on mapping the fate of Cardinal František Tomášek, an important personality of 20th century church life in Czechoslovakia. He concentrates in particular on the period of his pastoral work in Prague from 1965, when he was appointed apostolic administrator, until his death in 1992. The book uses Tomášek's life and activities to show the situation of the Roman Catholic Church and its interaction with the state and society, especially during the period of normalization after the August 1968 occupation. The monograph is based on an extensive study of archival sources, especially less used materials from the provenance of the Archive of Security Forces.
