Festlichkeiten in Zeiten des Krieges: Öffentliche Zeremonien und Rituale in mitteleuropäischen Städten 1618 bis 1650

conference, For scholars
30. 6. 2022 – 1. 7. 2022
Kulturtreff, Baudergraben 1, Altdorf bei Nürnberg

The international conference is organized by the Institute of History of the Czech Academy of Sciences, Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg and town Altdorf bei Nürnberg.

Programme

The Thirty Years' War affected numerous Central European towns to a considerable extent. Many of them experienced a significant demographic decline as a direct or indirect consequence of the war, due to military campaigns and battles in their immediate vicinity, sieges, destruction and military occupations, as well as epidemics, malnutrition, famine and forced emigration that accompanied the campaigns. Many towns fell into economic difficulties, the burdens of war often led to fatal indebtedness with long-term consequences. However, everyday life in the urban communities continued. This included a series of cyclically repeated or occasional rites and celebrations that have so far escaped the systematic attention of history and other social science. These festivities are the focus of the international conference that will take place in Altdorf near Nuremberg on 30. 6. – 1. 7. 2022.

The languages of the conference are German and English.
