Hang Them Up! New Perspectives on Historical Wall Maps Studies

The workshop Hang Them Up! New Perspectives on Historical Wall Maps Studies, organised by the Italian Geographical Society in collaboration with the University of Roma Tre, the University of Florence, the University of Erfurt and the Institute of History of the CAS, will take place at the seat of the Italian Geographical Society from 8 to 9 October 2025.
The workshop will focus on wall maps from the 19th and 20th centuries, examining their roles in education, politics, and culture. We anticipate 20-minute contributions from each speaker, followed by ample time for in-depth discussions. The workshop will conclude with a round-table discussion to synthesize ideas and foster collaborative dialogue among participants.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
- Historical and comparative dimensions of wall maps
- Cultural significance and impact of wall maps on geographical knowledge
- Roles of wall maps in education, politics, and culture
- Preservation and digitization of historical wall maps
- Methodological approaches to the production and study of wall maps
