VI Jornada Internacional Austriaco Orbe – Red Sucesión. Agencia transnacional y cultura política en torno a la Augustísima Casa. España y Bohemia, 1598-1713
The international and interdisciplinary seminar "Agencia transnacional y cultura política en torno a la Augustísima Casa, España y Bohemia, 1598-1713," organized by the Institute of History of the CAS and the Department of Early Modern History, Faculty of Arts, Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, will be held on the 30th of October 2024 in the Historicista Hall (Módulo X), Facultad de Filosofía y Letras (UAM), Campus de Cantoblanco, C. Francisco Tomás y Valiente, 1, (28049 Madrid). The seminar is organized within the framework of the projects "Central European Knights of the Order of the Golden Fleece" (Strategy AV 21, Anatomy of European Society) and "Red de Referencia Red Sucesión 3.0: relaciones internacionales, cultura política y dinámicas imperiales entre Europa y América (1648-1748)" (Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación).
The workshop will focus on the issue of transfers between territories under Habsburg rule in the 16th and 17th centuries. The dynastic cooperation between the Spanish and Austrian Habsburgs created a culturally non-homogeneous alliance between the German-speaking areas of Central Europe and the Mediterranean region. Mutual fiscal-military relations ranged from recruiting soldiers for the Spanish army in Central Europe to financial support for the struggle against the Ottomans in the east, using Spanish silver from overseas colonies.
Their cooperation was further strengthened by intermarriages between the dynastic lines, which led to an intense cultural transfer spanning art, fashion, and commodities. This transfer had a profound and lasting impact on Europe's political and cultural development in the early modern period. The remnants of this influence can still be identified today, underscoring the enduring significance of the Habsburg rule.
The main focus of the seminar will, therefore, be on the following research directions:
- Fiscal-military relations
- Art and Collecting
- Noble culture and values
The meeting aims to strengthen scientific collaboration between Spanish and Czech scholars and identify common themes for future international and interdisciplinary projects.
As a side event of the workshop, the panel exhibition "The Order of the Golden Fleece and Central European Nobility (16th–17th centuries)" will be opened by the authors of the exhibition, Ondřej Lee Stolička and Milena Hajná (National Institute of History).
